A 27-year-old Sri Lankan arriving from Singapore was arrested by the Customs yesterday at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), while attempting to smuggle 10 live Arowana and 14 Koi carp fish valued at Rs 320,000 into Sri Lanka.

The Customs Bio Diversity Officer arrested the suspect, a resident of Galle on charges of importing the fish without a valid permit of import of live animals and health certificate.

The Customs official said live fish consignment has been ordered to be re-exported immediately by the Animal Quarantine authorities as it is a violation of Animal Disease Act No 59 of 1992.

Further investigations into the case were carried out under the guidance of Additional Director General of Customs Stanley Senarathne and Director of Customs M.A. Karunarathne.
