The government is in the process of introducing an ‘e –Land Registry Programme’ to ease land registration and obtaining information on lands when investments are made on development projects, a Home Affairs and Management Ministry spokesman said.

He said an experts committee representing the relevant government agencies was appointed to study the programme with objective minimising red tape and documentation when a land is purchased by an investor for a development project.

“The Registration of Documents Ordinance of 1863 will be amended and the number of dates to register a land will be reduced to five days from the current 51 days. The steps to register a land will also be minimized to two from the current 9,” the spokesman said.

The ‘e-Land Registry Programme’ will be first implemented in the Western Province as a pilot project and then diversified to all 25 districts.

The Cabinet approval for the project was granted on Tuesday on a joint proposal presented to the Cabinet by Ministers Vajira Abeywardana and Development Strategies and International Trade Minister Malik Samarawickrama.
