The National Police Commission (NPC) yesterday ordered IGP Pujith Jayasundera to send DIG Nalaka Silva on compulsory leave with immediate effect following a directive from Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara.

Minister Madduma Bandara recommended the NPC to send DIG Silva on compulsory leave to facilitate an independent inquiry.

DIG Nalaka de Silva, was earlier in charge of the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) but is currently mired in a controversy over a leaked phone conversation of an alleged plot to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

He was transferred temporarily to the Police IT division, but the Minister has now urged the NPC to send him on leave immediately.

In the wake of the phone conversation believed to be between DIG de Silva and a member of the Anti-Corruption Force which went viral, several UPFA MPs had demanded that DIG Silva should be arrested over the alleged plot.
The investigation into the allegations against DIG Silva is being carried out by the CID.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had also called for a full report from the IGP on the matter.
