DM-1-18The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) will formally request former president Mahinda Rajapaksa to take over its leadership, a party official said yesterday.

Party chairman G.L. Peiris told a news conference that the party had completed two years since its inception and its victory at the local government elections held 16 months after it was formed was something unprecedented.

“We won 71 per cent of the electoral wards,” he said and added that part of the credit had to go to former minister Basil Rajapaksa who formed the party and spearheaded it to victory.

Prof. Peiris said the SLPP was preparing to hold its national convention.

Referring to Army Commander Mahesh Senanayake’s request for limited police powers to curb the Ava group menace, he said his party was opposed to police powers given to the military.

“These are essentially police functions. That is the reason for having the Special Task Force,” Prof. Peiris said.

However, he said the Army Commander’s statement showed that the Police had failed in carrying out their duties.
