Referring to the recent remarks made by Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith that human rights had become the religion among the Western nation, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader and MP Udaya Gammanpila said it was not a political remark.

Addressing a news conference, he said some politicians like Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera had fathomed it in a wrong way and criticized the statement.

“It is apparent that some groups are attempting to politicize Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and label him as a political advocate,” Gammanpila said.

“We are in favour of what Cardinal Ranjith said on human rights because nowadays human rights are only a tool that is used by the Western countries to tame countries which are not adhered to their tunes.”
