Western Province Waste Management Authority has begun “Mihisaru” – a project to recycle waste at the Hendala Dikkowita Waste Management Unit and produce organic compost fertilizer, to be distributed throughout the country under the brand “Mihisaru”

This project has been inaugurated under the theme “ Mihikatha Sarukara Athamita Sarukarawai”- earn through an organic rich earth.

Left over food, kitchen waste and degradable garbage removed from the Sri Lanka Ports’ Authority, Wattala-Mabola Urban Council and Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha areas, are recycled and transformed to organic fertilizer at the recycle centre.

Speaking about the project, the Assistant Manager of Dikowita Waste Management Centre, Dhammika Amarasinghe said, the objective of the recycling process begun in 2011 is to supply good quality organic fertilizer to people for a good harvest and thereby enhance their earning from the home garden cultivation, while helping to eliminate environmental disasters.

About 10 tons of garbage are received daily at the centre. They are put into the tanks built at the recycle unit and left for three months to whither. Later these conditioned wastes are sent for grinding by machines installed at the yard which are then issued to the market under the brand ‘Mihisaru’ in bags of 10, 20 and 50 kilos, the Assistant Manager said.

This organic fertilizer is sold at a reasonable price and now many cultivators use it to yield a good harvest from their home garden cultivation. The Waste Management Centre also provided the know-how to those interested, to make the compost fertilizer at their own gardens and help to secure the environment.
