  • At the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre in December

Untitled-1The festive season of December will have you toe tapping and singing along as Cinnamon Life presents super hit West End musical Mamma Mia! at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre. The endearing Mamma Mia! has left a legion of fans in its wake, owing to its lighthearted depiction of love and family interwoven with the timeless music of ABBA. But what many of the fans of the Mamma Mia! film adaptation will be surprised to know is that the musical preceded the movie by several years – the first musical production was staged in 1999 while the movie was released only in 2008.

Named after ABBA’s 1975 chart topper, Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of Swedish pop/dance group ABBA which were composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. Both Ulvaeus and Andersson were involved in the development of the show from its inception. Having envisioned the theatrical potential of ABBA songs “The Winner Takes It All” Judy Cramer – producer of the musical – convinced an initially sceptical Ulvaeus and Andersson to come on board.
