It is reported that the second round of discussion held regarding the increase of salaries of the plantation workers was concluded without any agreement.
Secretary, Lanka Jathika Estate Workers Union, Suresh Vadivale said that the discussions were held with the aim of increasing the salaries of plantation workers to Rs. 1000/- per day.
The agreement between the estate trade unions and Estate administrations had to be renewed every two years and the current agreement was scheduled to be expired on 14th of this month.
It is reported that the Estate administrations have declined the demand for an increase in salary for the estate workers citing various reasons, such as increase in taxes & costs, decrease in prices of corps, during the discussions.
Accordingly, the Lanka Jathika Estate Workers Union had decided to make a proposal for the increasing of salaries in the Budget.
