The Urban Development Authority (UDA) will begin the acquisition of 25 acres of land identified in the Colombo District for development purposes soon, UDA Chairman Jagath Munasinghe said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror Mr. Munasinghe said the authority had identified state land, high in commercial value, that were not used to its full potential.   “We have several acres of state land that is not used for anything at all and stands empty in commercial areas in the city and suburbs. We proposed to acquire these and ensure they are used to its full potential.”

Mr. Munasinghe went on to say the move was gazetted long ago, but the acquisition process was only being acted upon now.

“Empty and unused land belonging to state institutions are not the only ones that will be acquired. Land with illegal construction and lands that have constructions that have not been approved under their permits will also be considered,” he said.

Land acquired under the gazette will be leased out to local and international companies for commercial purposes.

Pettah (nine acres of land near the railway station), North Colombo, Chalmers Granaries and several acres in Battaramulla have been identified for acquisition at the moment.

“Our only aim is to develop these lands and use them to their full commercial potential,” he concluded.
