Proroguing Parliament

DM-1-191By Yohan Perera

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was sacked from the post of prime minister, accused President Maithripala Sirisena of violating the Constitution by proroguing Parliament without consulting the Speaker.

He told foreign journalists that Speaker Karu Jayasuriya would decide on convening Parliament shortly and expressed confidence that it would be done soon.

“The President has violated the Constitution by proroguing Parliament. He has to consult the Speaker when doing so. He consulted the Speaker when he did it in April this year,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said. “I am confident of securing majority support in the House.”

Referring to the alleged plot to assassinate the President, he said investigations were continuing and Law and Order Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara would have informed the President about the investigations when they were completed.

Responding to foreign journalists on a letter that was being circulated in social media web sites saying he had requested for a UN peace keeping force to Sri Lanka, Mr. Wickremesinghe said he had not sent any such letter. “I have only asked the United National Front (UNF) peacekeeping force to act decisively,” he said.
