Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said yesterday President Maithripala Sirisena had informed him that steps would be taken to reconvene Parliament on November 7 but that the reconvening date was still to
be gazetted.

He said at a party leaders meeting in the parliamentary complex, the TNA, JVP and SLMC representatives had asked him to convene parliament without further delay.

The Speaker said he pointed out to the President when he met him on Thursday that it was a mistake to prorogue parliament without consulting the Speaker.

He said the current political crisis should be settled in parliament and that he was concerned about the instability prevailing in the country.

“I think I have a responsibility to uphold democracy and the stability in the country. Mahanayake Theras and civil society leaders have also highlighted this fact,” the Speaker said and assured he would take steps to resolve this national crisis without letting it drag any further.
