Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) led by Mano Ganesan had proposed President Maithripala Sirisena to hold a Presidential Election in January if the President could not work with UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, MP Ganesan told a media briefing yesterday.

He said that he made the proposal when his party members met President Sirisena last afternoon. “The President gave us three options, first to join the new Government, second to abstain from voting in Parliament and third not to allow UNF to reappoint Mr Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister,” he said.

“However, we rejected all these and suggested that he declared a Presidential Election in January if he could not work with Mr Wickremesinghe,” Mr Ganesan said.

Asked if he was offered money, Mr Ganesan said such a need did not arise as they rejected supporting the newly appointed Prime Minister. Asked about the possible dissolution of Parliament he said such a move would be illegal. “We will fight against dissolution if such a thing took place,” he said.
