CID records 4-hour-long statement from IGP

 Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara was questioned yesterday for nearly four hours by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with the alleged conspiracy to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.   


The IGP, who entered the premises of the at 9.00 am yesterday (25) was questioned about the role he played in the alleged conspiracy. The questioning of the IGP went on till 1.00pm. This is the first time he was asked to appear before the CID in connection to this case.   

Police sources said the IGP was questioned about several facts that had come up during the interrogation of former DIG – Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) in relation to the alleged conspiracy.   The release of two Light Machine Guns (LMGs) that were allegedly authorised by him was also one of the matters that came up during questioning, these sources revealed.   

He was told to be ready to answer more questions on the matter on a later date.
