Untitled-10As children we were very quick to shout out MPHOT (monkey praises his own tail), as soon as we heard someone praising him or herself instead of allowing those around to do the praising.   I have not heard this acronym being shouted out in the past few years and begin to wonder whether MPHOT has become the mainstream of Colombo life. With the advancement of technology, it is now very easy to critique oneself positively, writing a blog or a review under a pseudonym, and affixing clever taglines to them to attract readers.  This is very common, especially in the areas of fashion, food, boutique and other hotels and self-owned business establishments.  It does not take long for an intelligent person to figure out the style of writing in such critiques and conclude that they have been written by the same person under several pseudonyms.

Then there are those who, if an award of any sort is not coming their way, have a friend organise an event and present them with some award in relation to their trade and then splash it all over social media.

CITY-DM-20-29For a small city we are inundated with fashionistas, cooks, beauty queens and kings and hoteliers.  Based on obscure magazine and website features, there is a glut of world's best hotels in the country, especially since it seems that any house can now be renovated slightly and identified as a boutique hotel.  Also, if nobody is praising you, it is even better to publish your magazine and praise yourself. Or else paying loads of money anonymously to organise and enter a fancy competition to be assured of a spot in whatever is fabulous. Our politicos are no better, calling each other rogues and professing their own virtues and honesty over available media.

Life has now become such a farce where one cannot even believe a recommendation these days since one is not sure of the authenticity of the review.  Sadly, this is a common phenomenon worldwide and not limited to Colombo.
