Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday informed Parliament that he had accepted UPFA MP Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Opposition Leader while UPFA General Secretary, MP Mahinda Amaraweera was appointed Chief Opposition Whip.

The Speaker also announced that Lakshman Kiriella had been appointed as the Leader of the House and Gayantha Karunathilake as the Chief Government Whip.

According to the new appointments former opposition leader R. Sampanthan will be replaced by Mahinda Rajapaksa while former chief opposition whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake will be replaced by Mahinda Amaraweera.
However, House Leader Lakshman Kiriella, TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran and SLMC Leader Rauf Hakeem pointed out that Mahinda Rajapaksa’s parliamentary membership was questionable because he had obtained membership of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and as such requested the Speaker to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to inquire into this matter.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said he would give a ruling on this matter on Friday.
