Opposition Leader post

By Lahiru Pothmulla

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) had sent its position on Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s party membership issue, to relevant authorities, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam told the Daily Mirror yesterday.

He said however, he was unable to disclose details. He said that a detailed statement would be issued to the media and to the public in due course.

Mr Rajapaksa, along with more than 50 SLFP MPs, officially joined the SLPP at a function held at his residence at Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo on November 11.

Several MPs, including MP Lakshman Kiriella and R. Sampanthan, raised the issue of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa obtaining SLPP membership in Parliament on Tuesday.

The MPs argued Mr Rajapaksa was not eligible to be appointed as the Opposition Leader since he had obtained SLPP membership.

They said the SLPP was not a constituent of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) from which Mr Rajapaksa contested the General Election.
