Rains wreak havoc in North

Torrential rains and resultant floods wreaked havoc in all five districts of the Northern Province with more than 45,000 people from nearly 14,000 families having been severely affected , the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.   
The affected districts in the Northern Province are Mullaithivu, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna.      

The affected districts are Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna.  


Thes districts have received rainfall more than 300mm during the past days according to DMC.  


The DMC said that 8,539 people had been sheltered in 52 welfare camps.  


Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena directed relevant officials to provide immediate relief to the affected people.

The Mullaitivu main road has been blocked due to the floods.  


In the Kilinochchi District all the sluice gates of the Iranaimadhu Tank have already been opened and a large number of families have been displaced.  


Sluice gates were also opened in Rajanganaya, Angamuwa and Deduru Oya reservoirs last morning.  


The Navy and the Army personnel were engaged in relief and rescue missions in the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi Districts, which are worst affected by the inclement weather condition.  


Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology said rains more than 75mm are expected in Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Matara Districts in the coming days.
