Two Sri Lankan movies vying for Oscar honours

Impulse-1-154For the first time in the 72-year Sri Lankan film history, two Sri Lankan movies will be competing in the main competition at the upcoming 91st Oscar Film Awards organised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Accordingly, Chandran Rutnam’s newest movie ‘According to Matthew’ and Anuruddha Jayasinghe’s ‘Ginnen Upan Seethala’ will vie for honours in the main competition of the prestigious global film festival in 2019.

Though this is the first time that two Sri Lankan movies would be competing in the Oscar’s main competition,  Dr. Lester James Peries’ ‘Wekande Walawwa’ produced by Chandran Rutnam and Chandran Rutnam’s ‘Alimankada’ (The Road From Elephant Pass) competed in the Oscar’s ‘best foreign language film’ category in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

The Oscar film festival will be held from February 12 to 19.

The 91st Oscars awards ceremony will be held on, February 24 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just announced shortlists in consideration for the 91st Oscars® in nine categories: Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film and Visual Effects.  



The 91st Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019
