Sri Lanka has today become a centre of drug smuggling, mainly due to politicians harbouring drug smugglers, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

He said this while attending the opening ceremony of the two-storey Sangawasaya at the Pushparama Purana Maha Viharaya at Malawenna, Galle.

Mr. Rajapaksa said it was time for the parents to take action to safeguard their children from drugs without waiting for the government to do so.

“A strong system based on religious places of worship should be made to eradicate the drug menace. The police and other security forces should take legal action against drug smugglers without giving into political influences,” he said.
MPs Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, Chandima Weerakkody, Mohan de Silva and former parliamentarian Geetha Kumarasinghe were also present at this occasion.
