President wants steps taken to control ‘Sena Dalambuwa’

President Maithripala Sirisena is reported to have instructed the Cabinet yesterday to take immediate steps to control the spread of feared crop pest ‘Fall Armyworm’ which is commonly called by farmers as Sena Dalambuwa.   

 

  • Infestations have already been confirmed in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka    

 

The pest is fast spreading in the districts such as Ampara, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa destroying crops including maize and rice.   


The President said the spread of this pest would affect the food security, and therefore special measures should be taken to contain it. He also said the crops had yielded better harvest this year.   


This is a pest that has afflicted the agriculture in Africa and Asia. Infestations have already been confirmed in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.
