Nine Indian fishing trawlers held by the Sri Lanka Navy for poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters were released from Sri Lankan custody on Sunday.

The handing over of these trawlers was done with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, the Navy said.

These trawlers moored at the jetty of SLNS Uththara in Kankesanthurai were repaired by a dedicated team of Indian engineers who arrived in Sri Lanka on January 17.  Accordingly, a craft of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard escorted the repaired trawlers to the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) north of Kankesanthurai on Sunday evening and handed them over to the Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Ameya’.
