The threat to the agriculture sector from Fall Armyworm has to be tackled like facing a war and as such a national programme with a specific time frame to control it was essential,
President Sirisena said.

The President met officials and political authorities connected to the issue at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday and said a Presidential Task Force is to be set up to find a solution to one of the most destructive pest invasion in recent times in Sri Lanka.

He instructed officials to work out a collective pesticide programme to address the issue with the cooperation and participation of both, the state and private sector and added the STF must be met on a daily basis to review the progress of all these measures.

Deputy Mahaweli Development Minister Ajith Mannapperuma, an additional Secretary of the Presidential Secretariat and an official from the Plantation Ministry were also appointed to the task force.
President Sirisena also instructed to put in place a plan to control the pest by educating farmers and with other steps with the assistance of field and research officers of the state and private sector.
