The Police have identified 24 leading drug smugglers who had fled the country, Police Spokesman  Ruwan Gunasekara said yesterday.

He told a news briefing that the investigations were being carried out by the CID to confiscate their assets under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, No.5 of 2006.  “The court has already withheld the properties of some of these drug smugglers ,” SP Gunasekara said.

“The Police Chief has instructed the CID to take steps to confiscate the assets of the main drug dealer in the Beruwala heroin detection case,”he said.

Meanwhile, SP Gunasekara said 737 kg of heroin were seized and 47,987 suspects taken into custody in 2018 while 107 kg of heroin was seized and 2,895 suspects taken into custody in January this year.
“The Police have also conducted awareness programmes in 5,700 schools countrywide on the dangers inherent in drug use. This was done to mark the National Drug Prevention Week,” he said.
