No party enjoys a majority in the Constitutional Council (CC) and therefore has no opportunity to influence its decisions, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.

He said this amid various views being expressed on this matter in Parliament.

“The composition of the CC is decided in such a way that no political party gets to enjoy a majority,” the Prime Minister said. “No party can influence the CC to make decisions according to its whim and fancy.”
The Prime Minister said he had never promoted anyone to any posts though he is a member of the CC.

He said those who are shouting today about the CC were the very people who formed an illegitimate government last year and failed to achieve they objective.
The Prime Minister said the Opposition should have proposed an amendment to change the members of CC as and when posts such as the post of opposition leader.
