The Colombo Municipality declared a week from September 10 till September 16 as a Dengue Prevention Week parallel to the National Dengue Prevention Week. The decision had been made by the authorities to be prepared for the likely increase of dengue during the coming inter-monsoon period in October.

CMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni said that 60 groups comprising defence and regional public officials would be sent house to houses within the Colombo District on inspection rounds and educate the public. Health officers attached to the Ministry of Health, microbiologists, army personnel, officials of the Environment Police and PHI’s of the CMC would be engaged in the prevention programme. He said it would focus on places such as Dehiwala and Slave Island from where most of the dengue cases had been reported.

He added that although there is no spiking in the incidence of dengue, the potential is high during the  heavy rains predicted at the beginning of next month.
