The All Island Canteen Owners’ Association (AICOA) said today they would increase the price of hoppers to Rs.15 from last night, in the wake of the recent gas price increase.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror AICOA Chairman Asela Sampath said they had to spend about Rs. 6,000 extra per month for gas, which they could not afford.

The price of a 12.5 kg cylinder of gas had been increased by Rs.195 from Wednesday night.

“The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) also gave permission to increase gas prices as requested by the gas companies. They did not consider the suffering of the people We urged the CAA  to impose a control on the price of food items. Until then, as canteen owners, we have decided to increase the price of a hopper to Rs. 15 from midnight today. However, no price increases would be effected so far on food varieties sold at canteens,” he said.

He said that as such, the prices of a plain tea, milk tea and lunch packets would remain the same.
