Participating as the chief guest at the 22nd Annual Conference of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) held in Colombo on February 17th.,  President Maithripala Sirisena stressed the need to form a broad political alliance against the UNP-led capitalist forces.

He said bringing forth a new national movement to form a new government and a new set of programmes for the betterment of the country is the main responsibility of all those who love the country today.

This year is an election year, where a new government is being formed and everyone should ask their conscience whether the new government should be serving powerful forces of the right or else a government be made that identifies the problems of the country and loves the people for the betterment of the nation and its future.   The President said that the UNP was not led by its leader today.   He said the need of the hour is a new government that is friendly to the nation and that without a people-oriented collective movement that rises against capitalist policies, victory cannot be achieved. The President added that the country must be freed from the huge debts and that economical prosperity should be established.

The MEP which played a major role in the battle towards accomplishing the wishes of the people, is a historical party and the President expressed gratitude for the services rendered.  Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thero, Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, leader of the MEP Dinesh Gunawardana, leader of the Lanka Sama Samaja party Prof.Tissa Witharana, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Communist Party D.E.W.
